Even Keel Development Inc. is a fully registered and incorporated 501(c)3 Nonprofit organization that seeks to help Merchant Mariners and their families through the struggles that going to sea causes. We hope to be a corner stone in supporting the Merchant Marine community through all mental, social, and financial challenges they may face. Thus leading to a stronger merchant service and healthier mariners.

FACTS ABOUT THE MERCHANT MARINE
- The Merchant Marine is an essential branch in trade with 95% of all world’s goods – comprising 90% of trade wealth – traveling by sea
- While serving as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of Defense General Mattis stated every defense plan he looked at had an aspect to it dependent on Merchant Marine capabilities
- In responding to the earth quake in Haiti, the Hurricanes in Puerto Rico, the Tsunami in Japan, and almost every other humanitarian crisis the Merchant Marine delivered a majority of supplies.
- A typical Merchant Mariner will spend 6-8 months at sea every year he or she is active in the industry
- A Merchant Mariner is as likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and the situations they cause (substance abuse, family issues, financial struggles) as any other group.
- Merchant Marines do not qualify for veteran’s status meaning they do not have access to veterans benefits, counseling, etc.
- Few if any support groups exist for the families of Merchant Marines away.
- Despite all of this Mariners continue to show up to their vessels and crew them through any and all conditions.
